Needles:  DPN’s size 10 - set of 4

Note about the needles: You’ll be knitting back & forth on two DPN’s for this scarf, but you’ll need the additional DPN’s for when you’re working the braided sections.

Length: 63”
Width: 5”

Instructions

Cast on 30 stitches.
Work in k1 p1 ribbing for 3 inches.

Step 1: “Work Braid” – see instructions below.
Step 2: Work k1p1 ribbing for 30 rows.

Repeat these two steps until you’ve worked the braid 6 times (or until desired length). End by working 3” in ribbing. Bind off loosely in pattern

Definition of "Work Braid"

At this point, you’ll continue in k1p1 ribbing, but you’re going to split it into 3 separate sections of 10 stitches each as follows:

  • 1st section: k1p1 across 10 stitches, turn and work back. Continue ribbing on just these 10 stitches for 20 rows. Then let that section just hang on one DPN. Do not cut yarn.
  • 2nd section: With a new dpn & a separate ball of yarn, k1p1 across next 10 stitches for 20 rows. Let that section hang on another dpn. Do not cut yarn.
  • 3rd section: With a new DPN & another ball of yarn, work k1p1 ribbing on the last 10 stitch section for 20 rows. Do not cut yarn.

You now have 3 separate sections on three separate DPN’s.
Lay the scarf flat on a table, and braid these sections being careful not to twist any of the sections.
To do this:

  1. Move left section into middle position.
  2. Move right section into middle position.
  3. Move left section into middle position.

Now place all three sections in their new order onto one dpn. Cut the yarn from the two sections that are attached in the middle of the row, but leave the strand that is at the end of the row to continue knitting with.
