From now on, you’ll just knit every round. Knit until the hat measures 5” (5.5”, 5.5”) from the cast on.

  • Round 2: Knit all stitches
  • Round 3: *k1, k2tog* Repeat to end of round.
  • Round 4: Knit all stitches

Keep repeating *k2tog* until you have about 8 or 9 stitches left. Cut yarn, leaving about an 8 inch tail, and using a tapestry needle, draw the tail through the stitches and cinch closed. Secure the end well inside the hat.

Ear Flaps

Mark for Placement

Find the beginning of the round at the cast on. This will be the middle of the back, and the ear flaps will be placed at either side of it.

Left earflap: Count 5 stitches to the left of the center stitch, place marker. Then count 9 stitches to the left of that marker and place another marker. The left earflap will be between these two markers.

Right earflap: Count 5 stitches to the right of the center stitch, place marker. Then count 9 stitches to the right of that marker and place another marker. The right earflap will be between these two markers.

Check to make sure you’re happy with the ear flap placement, and adjust markers if you feel they should be forward or back a bit.

Left Earflap

With right side facing and starting at the marker closest to the middle, pick up and knit 9 stitches. (You’ll be picking up from right to left.)
Knit 6 rows.
Row 7: k2tog, knit to the last two stitches, k2tog ( 7 stitches)
Row 8: Knit

Row 11: Slip 1, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over (1 stitch)
Cut yarn leaving about a 6 inch tail and pull end through.

Right earflap

Work as left earflap.

Attach strands of additional yarn to ends of ear flap, braid to desired length, and knot the ends together.
