Materials
Yarn: DK Merino Superwash, 2 skeins Main Color (MC), one skein each of two contrast colors (CC1 & CC2) In the sample, MC = black, CC1 = charcoal grey, CC2 = red.
Needles: 16” circulars size 4 & 6, and Double Pointed Needles size 6.
Gauge
5.5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch, 6.5 stitches per inch in colorwork (after steaming)
Size
To fit a 20-22” head – the hat is oversized & slouchy, and the ribbing is stretchy, so it will fit a variety of sizes.
Note
All plain knit rounds and decrease rounds are knit using MC.
Instructions
Using CC2 and size 4 needles, cast on 106 stitches. Join to knit in the round and place marker.
Change to CC1, and work K1, P1 ribbing for two rounds.
Change to MC, and work K1, P1 ribbing for 10 rounds.
Changing to size 6 needles, increase 20 stitches evenly as follows:
K6, (m1, k5) X 20 (126 stitches)
Knit 1 round.
Increase 14 stitches in the next round as follows:
K5, M1, (K9, M1) X 13, end k4 (140 stitches)
Knit 1 round.
Work Chart 1.
Knit 3 rounds.
Work Chart 2.
Knit 3 rounds.
Work chart 3.
Knit 3 rounds.
Decrease 28 stitches evenly as follows:
K2. K2tog (k3 k2tog) x27, k1 (112 stitches)
Work chart 4.
Knit 1 round.
Decrease round: (k4, k2tog) repeat to last 4 stitches, end k4. (94 stitches)
Work chart 5.
Knit 1 round.
Decrease round: (k3 k2tog) repeat to last 4 stitches, end k4. (76 stitches)
Work chart 6.
Knit 1 round.
Decrease round: (K3 k2tog) repeat to last stitch, end k1.
Changing to double pointed needles, continue decreasing as follows:
(K2 k2tog) repeat to last stitch, end k1. (61 stitches)
Knit 1 round.
(K1k2tog) repeat to last stitch, end k1.
(K2tog) repeat to last stitch, end k1.
(K2tog) repeat to last stitch, end k1.
Cut yarn leaving an 8” tail, using a tapestry needle, draw it through the remaining stitches, cinch it closed, bring tail to inside of hat and weave it in to secure the end. Weave in all remaining ends.
Block the hat lightly with steam (if you used a wool yarn), taking care not to steam (and stretch out) the ribbing.
