Body of Hat
Begin Purl Swirl stitch pattern as written above. Work in pattern until piece measures 5 (6.5, 8)”.
Crown Shaping
Because I can’t be sure what row with which you’ll begin your crown shaping, I can’t tell you exactly what to knit row by row. So I’ll just explain: You’ve probably noticed that each *p2* is jogged over one stitch from the previous p2 – so that the 1st purl is directly above the 2nd purl in the row below. Continue in this pattern, however after each p2, do an ssk decrease. So for example, round 1 would be *p2, ssk, p6*. This will decrease each repeat one stitch. After working your first decrease round, knit one round. Then continue working decreasing in this fashion every other round.
When you have just two knit stitches after the two purl stitches, continue the decreases but eliminate the plain knit rounds. In other words, decrease every round. When you get down to just 21 (24, 27) stitches, *ssk* all around for two rounds. Cut yarn, and using tapestry needle pull end through all stitches, cinch top shut and weave in the end on inside of hat.
Definitions
ssk: slip two stitches, one at a time as if to purl, from the left needle to the right
needle. Put the left needle into the two slipped stitches in front of the right needle and
knit the two stitches together as one.
