Quick Baby Socks

Materials

20 - 30 g worsted weight yarn
DPN’s size US 7

Gauge:  5 sts/inch

Instructions

Cuff

Cast on 24 stitches, divide evenly on 3 needles. Join without twisting.  Work k1p1 ribbing for 2”.

Divide for heel as follows: needle #1: 12 stitches, needles #2 & 3: 6 stitches each.

Heel flap

Working back & forth just on needle #1:

Row 1: with ws facing, sl 1, purl across, turn
Row 2: *sl 1, k1* across
Repeat these two rows until heel flap measures 1 ½”, ending with a knit row.

Turn heel

Row 1: (ws) s1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 2: s1, k3, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 3: s1, p4, p2tog, p1, turn
Row 4: s1, k5, k2tog, k1, turn
Row 5: s1, p5, p2tog, turn
Row 6: s1, k4, k2tog, do not turn. You should have 6 stitches left.

Gusset

Still using needle #1, pick up 8 stitches along side of heel.

Using empty needle, knit across needles #2 & 3 (instep) – these will now be on one needle. This is now needle #2.

Using empty needle, pick up 8 stitches along other side of heel. Also knit the next three stitches onto this needle (3 of the heel stitches). (You may have to use an empty needle to do this, and then slip the 3 knitted stitches onto the needle with the gusset stitches you just picked up.) This is now needle #3.

Stitches should be distributed as follows:

Needle 1: 11 stitches
Needle 2: 12 stitches (this is the top of the foot)
Needle 3: 11 stitches

Shape foot

Round 1:

Needle 1: knit to 3 stitches from end of needle, k2tog, k1
Needle 2: knit across
Needle 3: k1, ssk, knit to end

Round 2: Knit

Repeat these two rounds until you are down to 24 remain. Continue knitting every round until foot measures just 2 inches from picked up stitches.

Toe

Round 1:

Needle 1: knit to 3 stitches from end of needle, k2tog, k1
Needle 2: k1, ssk, knit to 3 stitches from end, k2tog, k1
Needle 3: k1, ssk, knit to end

Round 2: Knit

Repeat these two rounds until there are 12 stitches remain. Slip the stitches on the bottom of the foot onto one needle, and graft them together using the kitchener stitch.

Definitions

I-Cord: For the hat: continuing on just 2 DPN’s, with all 3 stitches on one DPN, knit the stitches. Then, put the right hand needle (the one with the stitches) in your left hand without turning it. Now slide the stitches to the other end of the needle, and continue knitting them, drawing the yarn tightly across the back of your work. This will form a little tube of knitted fabric.

Kfb: Knit in the front and the back of the stitch (increase)

K2tog: knit two stitches together as one (decrease)

P2tog: Purl two stitches together as one (decrease)

psso: Pass slipped stitch over

sl: Slip stitch from left needle to right needle as if to purl

SSK: slip, slip, knit (decrease)

WS: Wrong side
