Ruffled Mittens

Materials
Yarn: About 205 yards worsted weight yarn
Needles: 16" circular and DPN's size US 7
Gauge: 5 sts/inch
Instructions
Ruffle & Cuff
On circular needle, CO 108 sts. Join to knit in the round, place marker to mark beginning of round.
Knit 5 rounds.
*k3tog Repeat from * around (36 sts)
Work 8 rounds K1 P1 ribbing. On last round, increase 4 sts evenly. (40 sts)
Knit 4 rounds.
Thumb Gusset & Hand
Round 1: At beg of round, slip marker, inc 1, k2, inc1, pm.
Round 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10: Knit
Round 3: Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, k4, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Round 5: Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, k6, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Round 7: Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, k8, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Round 9: Knit to marker, slip marker, inc 1, k10, inc 1, slip marker, knit to end of round.
Knit around to first marker, then place the 12 stitches between the two markers on to a stitch holder or piece of yarn. Cast on 2 stitches to right needle and continue knitting around. Continue in stockinette stitch until mitten is about 1” shorter than desired length.
Decrease rounds
Round 1: *K2, k2tog* around
Round 2 & 4: Knit
Round 3: *K1, k2tog* around
Round 5: *k2tog* around
Break yarn leaving a 6” tail. With tapestry needle, draw yarn through stitches, gently closing hole. Weave end inside mitten.
Thumb
Divide the 12 sts from holder onto two DPN’s. Pick up 4 stitches from the cast on stitches by the thumb. Begin knitting in rounds.
On first round, when you come to the 4 picked up stitches, k2tog twice. You should now have 14 total thumb stitches.
Continue knitting until thumb is ¼” shorter than you want. *K2tog* around.
Break yarn leaving a 6” tail. With tapestry needle, draw yarn through stitches, gently closing hole. Weave end in.
Definitions
CO: Cast on
DPN: double pointed needle
inc: Increase under the horizontal thread between the stitches. To do this, insert the left needle from front to back under the horizontal thread, then knit it through the back loop.
k2tog: Knit two stitches together
kfb: Knit into the front and the back of the stitch
pm: place marker
Stockinette stitch: when knitting in the round knit every round.
