Diagonal Scarf

Materials
Yarn: 150 - 300 yards self-patterning worsted weight yarn
Needles: Size US 9 - 10
Note: This scarf can be worked in either Stockinette or Garter stitch. While I prefer stockinette, it does have a tendency to curl, which can be combatted a bit with blocking. However, if you prefer a scarf that truely lies flat, you may prefer to make it in garter stitch.
Instructions
Cast on Stitches needed for desired width of scarf. For example, 16 stitches in worsted weight yarn will create a narrow scarf, about 3 ½ inches wide. Cast on more stitches for a wider scarf. Work in desired stitch pattern.
Stockinette Stitch
Row 1: Purl across
Row 2: kfb of first stitch, knit across to last two stitches, k2tog.
Garter Stitch
Row 1: Knit across
Row 2: kfb of first stitch, knit across to last two stitches, k2tog.
Repeat these two rows until scarf reaches desired length, cast off all stitches.
Weave in ends; block scarf to lay flat.
Definitions
kfb: knit into the front and back of the stitch
k2tog: knit two stitches together
